Life Enrichment:

Valley Nursing and Rehabilitation Center strives to create an enjoyable, home-like atmosphere.  While every department focuses on improving quality of life, we have a team solely dedicated to that purpose.  Our Life Enrichment team provides various activities seven days a week.  Valley is proud to welcome Shannon Maxwell, LRT/CTRS as our new Recreational Therapist and Director of Life Enrichment.  Recreational Therapy has been proven effective in reducing depression, overcoming disabilities, decrease pain, improve memory, and reduce reliance on medication. (http://www.ncrta.org/Professional/benefits.htm#older adults)

Recreational Therapy is a treatment service designed to restore, remediate, and rehabilitate a person’s level of functioning and independence in life activities, to promote health and wellness as well as reduce or eliminate the activity limitations and restrictions to participation in life situations caused by an illness or disabling condition.” (American Therapeutic Recreation Association)

A Recreational Therapist works to promote the well-being of individuals who have mental, physical, emotional, and/or developmental disabilities.  Specialists use a variety of activities that focus on abilities while simultaneously addressing their needs.

Recreational Therapy uses the “APIE” method for creating group as well as individual activities.

Upon admission, residents are assessed holistically, with a detailed description of the resident, current preferences, and previous interests.

A plan of care is established with includes measurable goals and objectives, intervention strategies with sequence and structure, desired outcomes, and documentation of the intervention plan.

The plan is followed through by Life Enrichment staff, in collaboration with other departments to ensure best possible outcomes.

An evaluation is completed to determine the effectiveness of the interventions used (if goals and objectives were met), and resident’s level of satisfaction.

Shannon Maxwell is a Licensed Recreational Therapist (LRT) Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS).  She is a graduate of Western Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science in Recreational Therapy and obtained certification from National Council for Therapeutic Recreation in October 2009.  Shannon has served several different populations including psychiatric, geriatric, children with special needs, and individuals with mental deficits.
